As an eco-friendly mixed media artist I am deeply involved in everything that concerns Mother Earth. With my art I clean up mess and try to create awareness that we need to make different choices to take better care of our planet.
Nowadays, the contents of our wardrobe mainly consist of fast fashion items or clothing made from composite materials (50% cotton, 50% polyester for example). These are products that cannot be recycled and end up in landfills in third world countries or in the incinerator. Not good for the environment and also a shame, because they are often substances that could well serve another purpose.
As clothing, they are out of fashion, or have stains and holes in them. No longer wearable and no longer sellable at the thrift store. I want to use those clothes in the Textile Revolution. This is a new project where non-recyclable clothes are used to create new products. Think of patchwork blankets, cushions, cuddly toys, ornaments for Christmas and Easter, textile paintings.
To make the fabric easier to process, all clothing must first be cut clean. In doing so, all borders, edges, seams and buttons are cut off, so that you are left with beautiful patches. That’s a lot of work for one pair of hands and that’s why I organise Clean Cutting Circles: a meeting in my studio in the center of Delft, where we get together to cut the clothes clean.
The meetings are free! So if you are looking for fun, roll up your sleeves and do something for the environment, you are very welcome. The only thing you need to bring yourself: good scissors and a cup for your tea.
